This steam engine is entitled BODKIN No 2 as it employs a very similar valve as the BODKIN No 1. It was constructed in the Peake workshop from start through to completion using fine English machinery and handpicked materials from the most reputable suppliers. The Engine is double-acting, meaning that it makes power on both the up and down strokes. The valve is operated by an adjustable eccentric. This allows for the perfect tension to be achieved. The engine is able to be reversed by simply loosening a bolt, albeit very small, and changing the angle between the eccentric and the crank. The crankshaft is fitted with an adjustable rate oiler, to assist in the lubrication of one of the most important moving parts. Both the piston and the valve are fitted with adjustable glands so that the pressurized gas doesn't escape via any route other than the exhaust port. This is particularly advantageous for those wishing to collect steam, re-condense it and pump it back into the boiler for re-use. A small shaft of 2.5mm in diameter protrudes from the crankshaft so that the user may attach model machinery or use it in, for example, a marine application. BODKIN No 2 was designed with elegance and functionality in mind and as a tribute to the era of steam, the wooden base is a piece of antique pine which has been reclaimed and treated with Scandinavian oil. Materials: Brass, Stainless Steel, Steel, Enamel Paint, Oiled Pine base. The materials were chosen in consultation with a qualified engineer to ensure suitability. This engine comes with a Certificate of Authenticity with the signature and seal of the maker, Ben Peake. On the certificate is shown the number of the engine (of this model) to be made in the Peake workshop. Also included, is a small manual which explains the maintenance and running of this charming engine.
